Its about losing what you have?

There is a small Guanyin Bodhisattva made out of wood sitting on a small fridge in our kitchen.  My mom prays to Him every morning by burning a fresh sandalwood incense.  When we purchase fruits or cakes, we would always place them in front of Guanyin as a way of showing respect.  I pray to Him when no one is watching(one thing I don't like about praying in temples is that there is always somebody watching).
We pray because we have someone or something that we hold most dear, because we are frightened at the thoughts of losing them.  But life is essentially about losing the things most dear to you, be it materials, physical existence, or even emotions.  The things that are most dear are like air we breath: you never notice it until the moment it is gone, and then you start to suffocate and feel as if your own life is coming to an end.
It takes a whole lifetime to get used to losing, but get used to losing we must.
